How to Speedup a 3-D Computer Model

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Software is developed by Kumar, a computer scientist of Hopkins University, that speedups the displaying of 3-D models on computer. This software also gives the good control over the details level that appears on the computer screen. This software is called “surface library”. The initial version of this software is launched that can work with IRIX operating system.

NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline representations) are the mathematical shapes that are used by the computer to depict the curved surfaces. A computer combines NURBS together and creates a 3-D representation of the object to display on the computer screen.

This software handles these NURBS in a special way to do its job. It speedups the process of combining all the NURBS, so overall representation becomes speedy.

Usually the original 3-D model is converted into various small triangles which can make the original model on assembling. Whenever, a designer tries to look at a specific angle of the model, the triangles are assembled in another way to give the new look. In this software the numbers of triangles created are very less and some other shortcut methods are used to assemble the triangles and create the images. These methods are 100-200 times more efficient than the classic triangle technique. This software also allows the designer to zoom-in a specific part of a model.
