How to Investigate Digital Images: Real or Phony

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

A mathematical technique has been developed by two graduate students, FARID and DARTMOUTH, that can differentiate between and real and a phony image.

It is very easy to change any digital image using the easily available images software. The regular images are not much easier to change, but it requires the expertise. But once the images are digitalized, it is really easy to change it. And it is nearly impossible for human eyes to distinguish between a real and a dummy image. This activity can also be used to mislead the public.

The algorithm developed by the FARID looks at the code of images to find the tampering activity. Actually all the real and natural images have some specific statistics. Once an image is altered, these statistics are changed and there are some irregularities produced in the image code. The FARID algorithm looks for these disturbed statistics in the images and tells whether the image is real or tempered.

Although this technique is not perfect and there are chances of mistake but it has given a foundation. FARID has given a statistical model that can capture the regularities present in the natural images. In altered images these regularities are not found, so this model is really useful to find the tampered images.
